Kitchen Backsplash

The Kitchen Backsplash-Do You Need One?

A kitchen backsplash is something placed on the wall behind a stove or counter to protect the wall and make it easier to clean. Normal kitchen wall paint will fade and peel after repeated cleaning to remove grease splatters. There is a wide variety of materials to use for kitchen backsplashes, the only requirement being that the material is easy to clean and will not catch on fire easily. Other than these basic requirements, this is an area where a person can get very creative.

A kitchen backsplash is usually a small area, usually behind or around the stove or other cooking space. Because the backsplash covers only a small area, less material is needed. Some people opt for expensive, decorated tile as only a few will be needed. If you do a lot of cooking, a kitchen backsplash will save the wall behind your stove. Even the most careful cook is bound to get splatters on the wall at one point or another.
Stainless steel is durable, heat resistant and very easy to clean. Many restaurants chose stainless steel for this very reason. Stainless steel looks best in a modern looking kitchen. Make sure the type of stainless steel you chose will not rust. Ceramic tiles work well as a kitchen backsplash. They are also easy to clean and heat resistant. You can opt for any color that matches your kitchen décor. Other choices include glass, stone and wood painted with a durable paint that will stand up to scrubbing. The material you ultimately chose should be smooth so that it is easy to clean and it should not stain easily.

Your choices for a kitchen backsplash are limited only by your budget and imagination. Since a kitchen backsplash is only going to cover a limited area, only a small amount of material is needed. Many home improvement stores have sample materials or a limited quantity of a certain material or only a few tiles of a particular design that they will sell at a large discount. It doesn’t hurt to ask a salesperson if they have anything like this available. You could end up with enough expensive designer tiles to create your backsplash for less than the cost of a gallon of paint. Perhaps the store will have a few red tiles and more white tiles at a discount. Consider a border of red with white in the center. A kitchen backsplash is the one place you can really get creative without spending a lot of money.
