Another no-sew option is to tie fabric around the pillow. Cut your fabric 6 inches larger on all sides.

Place the fabric on the floor or a table so that it looks like a diamond facing you and put your pillow in the middle so that it looks like a square within the diamond.

Fold the left side of the diamond over of the pillow, followed by the right side. The fabric will overlap. Fold the top of the diamond down over the pillow and the bottom of the diamond up.

Grasp these pieces of fabric where they meet in the middle of the pillow and put a rubber band around them, as tight to the pillow as you can.

Arrange the ends of the fabric into a pleasing rosette, which will be held in place by the rubber band. Alternatively, you can tie the two ends into an attractive knot.

Recycling Projects

Be on the lookout at thrift stores and on the curb for items you can use in your cottage decor. A beat-up, wooden screens could look just right in the corner after getting a fresh coat of paint.

What is a Perennial Plant?

Perennial plants are plants that live beyond a year’s life cycle in the garden. Annuals live through one year’s season of growth and then die.

In comparison perennials grow for a number of years, varying from a few years to many years. Some perennials such as long lived peonies thrive for many years becoming a fixture of the garden.

Life Cycle

Some perennial plants die back during the winter and grow back in spring. Some perennials lose all their leaves during winter, then grow new leaves during the spring (e.g. hydrangea).

Other perennials are evergreen and keep their leaves during the winter months (e.g. rhododendron). Perennials generally require minimal upkeep once planted.

Growth

Newly planted perennials take 3 years to grow to their full width and height. Some perennials need dividing every 3 years, while some need dividing every 4 or 5 years.

Early blooming perennials should be divided in summer or fall; late blooming perennials should be divided in spring.

If the plant growth decreases and there is less flowering, it is time to divide the plant. As a general rule, cut back dead perennial foliage in the fall.

Full Sun Perennials

Examples of full sun perennials to plant in the garden are peonies, clematis, carnation, verbena, sweet pea, yarrow, heather, geranium, russian sage and salvia.

Shade Perennials

Examples of shade perennials to plant in the garden are foxglove, bergenia, bleeding heart, ferns, primrose, columbine, hellebore, fuchsia, violets, hydrangea, hosta and coral bells.
